Covering my angst with the soothing wisdom from my mother's prayer journals

A Prophet?

I was reading my Bible one morning this week and read in Deuteronomy that you will know someone is a real prophet if what they prophesy comes to pass. That reminded me of a visit I had many years ago with two women who showed up on my doorstep when we lived in California.

I had a passing acquaintance with one, but I had never seen the other. It was late in the afternoon and as I attempted to be a gracious hostess an unusual visit occurred.

Lydia, the woman I knew, introduced Leigh and explained that they were running some errands and decided to drive through our neighborhood which was on a beautiful peninsula. They came in and as we talked, I noticed Leigh seemed uncomfortable.

Our neighbor drove past the window and I commented that he had an interesting job at a record studio and had given the girls some uniquely shaped records.

Leigh said, “That’s it! That’s why I feel uneasy.  The Lord is telling me that there is evil in their family room and you must not let your girls go in their house.”

I thought, “Hmm, that’s strange,” but I checked my spirit and it felt okay so putting my doubt aside I said, “Well actually my husband has already told me that.  We’ve had a few strange encounters and he’s not comfortable having them be over there.”

After we moved we learned that their children were taken into custody by Children’s Services because of abuse. The parents were later indicted on child pornography charges.

Leigh had affirmed Don’s decision.

During that same visit I mentioned Matt.  Leigh again said, “The Lord is telling me that he loves your son and that one day Matt will write a book.”

Again, I thought, “Hmmm, that’s strange,” but I checked my spirit and it felt okay so putting away my doubt I replied, “Probably not because he has some severe developmental issues.”

She looked at me and said, “The Lord wants you to know that each night He reaches down and holds Matt close to His heart.”

I stopped breathing for a minute because she had just repeated my nightly prayers for Matt when he began living in a group home, “Lord, please reach down and hold him close since I can’t.”

There are several more parts to this timely visit but when I think of the experience of writing In My Mother’s Words and how many of Matt’s stories are in it, I think Matt did, in a way, write a book.

Mother wrote in her journal, “The Holy Spirit is the one who works to make our prayers acceptable.  He enlightens our minds so we may clearly see our desires, then softens our heart so we may feel them and finally He awakens and focuses those desires toward godly things.”

I don’t know that Leigh was a prophet, but I do know her visit strengthened my faith.

Grateful for so many things, especially the peace He gives and the opportunity to tell it to my kids, grandkids and anyone else who wants to listen. Many read my first book In My Mother's Words, and I have recently published my second book, Heart Whispers from the Old Testament. Both are the result of the prayer journals my mother gifted me her last Christmas. Those journals were full of the wisdom of a Faith Walker and had to be shared.

  1. Thank you for sharing this amazing story at “Tell me a Story.” I do believe that one of the Holy Spirit gifts is the gift of prophesy. If we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we then we can expect to hear the voice of the Lord telling us things. If a christian friend tells us what appears to be a word from the Lord, it is up to us to be gracious, then to wait and see if it comes to pass. This is what you did and it was confirmed to you in truth that you could receive. I have known people who have given me words, and often they are just words of encouragement and blessing, but some other words have come to pass. It is thrilling when we walk in the Spirit and hear from God.

  2. We so underestimate the power of God, don’t we? The world writes off things they don’t know by calling them “unexplained phenomenon.” Yet we don’t stop to see the obvious sign that we don’t need to be a prophet to figure out. Bless the ones who use their gifts.

  3. Oh, yes. I’m not THAT kind of prophet, but the Lord has used me in a different way. I just posted about prophets on my blog yesterday, which the Lord had laid on me a couple weeks ago. Compares various prophets and how we operate in our present-day world and the way it was back in that former stretch more than 2,000 years ago. Anyhow, I sure understand. I’ve had friends who could see/hear exactly as your friend did re: the neighborhood/family and the consequences that proved the reality of the prophetic view.

Thank you. Good sharing. Good blessing.
